Chandrayaan-2 was the second moon exploration mission of
Indian Space Research Organization after Chandrayaan-1.
It had three major parts-Lunar orbiter, the
Vikram lander and Pragyan lunar rover and all parts were
designed and developed in India.
Its main objective was to map the location and abundance of
water present on the moon.
The Chandrayaan-2 was launched to the moon on 22 July 2019 at
2:43 PM from Satish Dhawan Space center by GSLV MK 111 rocket.
And it entered the moon orbit on 20 August 2019. Vikram and the
rover were planned to land down at the south polar region of
moon at an altitude of 70 degrees at 1:50 on 7 September 2019.
Everything was going right as planned by the ISRO scientists
but at 1:52 AP, the Vikram lander deviated from its trajectory.
And finally at an altitude of 2.1 KM before landing, ISRO lost
contact with Vikram lander.
After that ISRO Scientist confessed that they had lost contact
with Vikram lander and data is being analyzed.
Did losing contact with Vikram lander ended up Chandrayaan-2
mission completely, No, it's wrong. Chandrayaan-2 orbiter is still
successfully circling the moon and its lifetime was 12 months
But now ISRO extended its life up to seven years. And ISRO
can still access the data/information on moon like climate,
presence of water and so on.
But recently Orbitor High-Resolution Camera clicked and sent
some images of Vikram lander to ISRO and now they are trying
to build contact with Vikram lander.
